Team HAI/Notilyze wins SAS Hackaton 2023
June 2023 – Team HAI/Notilyze has once again won accolades at SAS‘s annual global hackathon, the leader in AI and analytics.
HAI teamed with data science specialist Notilyze. The team emerged victorious in the Manufacturing category.
The winning project is an AI model that focuses on optimizing the industrial production of cheese.
The annual hackathon competition challenges teams in a wide range of sectors to solve business and societal problems using technology.
An expert jury selected winners in various categories that provide compelling examples of business and societal applications of AI and data analytics. This year, over 1,400 people from 75 countries participated, with a total of more than 140 companies, universities, governments, and SAS partners represented in the teams from all around the world.
Winning case: Smart control model for optimizing industrial cheese production
The Netherlands is one of the largest cheese producers in the world. Hackathon team HAI/Notilyze analyzed the data from a Dutch cheese factory and utilized SAS Viya to design a dashboard that explores all steps of the production process and builds models to predict yield and quality. Additionally, an API was developed to suggest process optimization options. Optimizing the cheese production process can increase yield while maintaining quality and reduce waste, thus simultaneously combating food waste.
Colin Nugteren from Team Notilyze said, “Through close collaboration with HAI and the cheese producer we achieved impressive results. That’s the power of collaboration. Without the structured factory data from hai-app, the powerful SAS Analytics, and the expertise of the cheese producer, our Data Science team wouldn’t have been able to achieve such remarkable results.”
For data analysis, a significant two years’ worth of historical data from hai-app (HAI’s cloud platform) was utilized. The hai-app software systematically stores all data about production and cheese quality. Real-time logsheets allow employees to monitor and record the progress of the production process and make adjustments if necessary.
This is how hai-app logsheets support daily operations in production. The analyses and model in SAS Viya directly utilize the data in hai-app. The hai-app logsheets are used by operators, quality engineers and technologists to monitor the production process. These logsheets are connected in real-time with the model in SAS Viya. This allows an adjustment advice calculated by the SAS Viya model to be immediately visible in the hai-app logsheets, for example, in the cheesemaking process.
This way, the recommendations from the model are logically integrated into the daily workflow.
For the data analysis, an impressive two years’ worth of historical data from the hai-app, HAI’s cloud platform, was utilized. It contains structured contextual data about milk quality, processing conditions and cheese quality.
Team HAI-Notilyze also won the SAS Hackathon in the Manufacturing category in 2022. For that hackaton, the team developed a tool for CO2 reduction in the process industry.
More information on the winners of the SAS Hackaton 2023 can be found here.
The overall winner of the SAS Hackathon 2023 will be announced during SAS Explore, the SAS AI and analytics technology conference, taking place from September 11-14, 2023 in Las Vegas.
HAI is a Dutch software company that provides an innovative cloud platform for the process industry, called hai-app.
With this platform, manufacturers can easily transform into a data-driven organization, where all employees have straightforward access to detailed real-time information on production, quality, energy, and (waste)water.
